Linux is a computer operating system which is based on free and open source software. Although many different varieties of Linux exist, all are Unix-like and based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released October 5, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux runs on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from mobile phones, tablet computers, routers, televisions and video game consoles, to desktop computers, mainframes and supercomputers. Linux is THE leading server operating system, and runs the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world. The development of Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration; typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed, both commercially and non-commercially, by anyone under licenses such as the GNU General Public License.

Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS) is a free and open source computer operating system developed by the National Resource Centre for Free/Open Source Software (NRCFOSS) of India. This software is also known by the acronym BOSS GNU/Linux or simply BOSS Linux. The latest version of this operating system, BOSS GNU/Linux Version 4.0, was released in February 2011. This software package has been described as "India's own PC operating system" the most meaningful product to come out of the Indian software industry in decades — and a work that a government department had done.. This is however hollow posturing because the operating system is based on Linux and Free and Open Source Software, which is produced by thousands of developers worldwide.
The software has also been endorsed by the Government of India for adoption and implementation on a national scale. BOSS GNU/Linux is an "LSB certified" Linux distribution: the software has been certified by the Linux Foundation for compliance with the Linux Standard Base standard. BOSS GNU/Linux is derived from Debian. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic operating system tools in Debian come from the GNU Project; hence the appendages GNU/Linux to Debian and BOSS. The product is free software in the sense in which the term is used by the Free Software Foundation, and it is distributed under the GNU General Public License. The latest desktop version of BOSS GNU/Linux is fully localised to eighteen Indian languages.

Linux Mint is a Linux-based computer operating system best known for its usability and ease of installation, particularly for users with no previous Linux experience. It is available in several editions with different codebases, nearly all of which are based on Ubuntu, which is itself based on Debian.

Linux Mint is composed of many software packages, of which the vast majority are distributed under a free software license (also known as open source). The main license used is the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) which, along with the GNU Lesser General Public License (GNU LGPL), explicitly declares that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, develop and improve the software. Linux Mint also includes some proprietary software, such as the Adobe Flash plugin, and uses a Linux kernel that contains binary blobs. Linux Mint is funded by its community of users. Individual users and companies using the operating system act as donors, sponsors and partners of the distribution.
